daytime running lights
6 months ago I purchased a 2000 A6 4.2 I live in Canada and the fog lamps come on as my daytime running lights. The problem is everytime I start my car, the interior lighting (dash, middle panel, etc) is lit up the same as with the lights on our off.....As a result, on a number of occasions I will drive without turning my headlights on. Is this normal? Why would the dashboard lights come on at full brightness - there is nothing to trigger me to turn on the lights. Any feedback (or tricks) would be much appreciated.

The dashboard lights behavior is set in the instrument controller as a separate option (at least in
current cars). From the VAG-Com site:
17-Instruments: K1 -- KWP-1281
VAG-COM Works fine.
Tweak:
There are four lighting modes:
Mode 0: Nothing lit until ext. light on
Mode 1: Pointers lit all the time
Mode 2: Scales lit all the time
Mode 3: Pointers and Scales lit all the time
Mode is changed in Adapation Channel 19. Standard value should be 11000 (or something close). The first (left-most) digit is the lighting mode.

It is possible to turn the damn thing off
Some time ago I found this "around the clock" dashboard illumination unlogical and confusing as far as I decide to turn the head light when I have a difficulties with reading the gauges.
The Canadian version of DRL is a mix of Scandinavian (where xenon low beam is allowed as daytime light) and German (where DRL is not mandatory). As a result, in Canadian version we have parking light and dash illumination all the time the ignition is on (kinda bonus for Canadian customers). Hopefully, the solution is simple and requres only the disconnection of one wire on the main switch. If you are not far from Toronto, I can show you this wire, otherwise I can take a picture of the connector and point the wire to cut.

PLEASE HELP, my instrument cluster display is fading!
Hi guys,
I just bought a 98 A6 2.8L, 90K, 3 weeks ago, loved everything about it, everything works.....until 3 days ago....when the instrument cluster red multi-display started to fade at the top left corner (the place where it display the CD and Track record). I left it for a few more days and the whole display deteriorated and starts to have horizontal black-out lines across the display (especially during day time when the temp is about 100F). In the beginning, I thought that some of the display's light source might have been blown, but then last night when its cooler, all the black line disappeared but the top left corner got a little worse, now I cannot even make out the word "CD" anymore! PLEASE HELP, any explanation and suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
