Default Did Audi change the headlights at some point?

I was at the dealer yesterday, and the new A6 with Xenon headlights looked different than my 99.5 with Xenon headlights. The ring around the primary reflector was different, and also mine has vertical lines between the headlight and the corner light while the new one did not. When was this changed? Just curious.
I like the newer one better.

Default Bigger aperture, more light, as of 2002+

Not sure about any minor changes which might/not have happened on other years.

Default Yes, and changes apparently more than cosmetic

Pre-2002 A6's had two different headlamp part numbers (left + right) for non-4.2 cars. The only difference between the two pairs is a cosmetic variation in the reflector design. A6 and allroad headlamps were interchangable between pre-MY02 cars, 4.2 excluded due to bumper and hood design variations.

Starting with MY02, the low-beam projector optic was increased from a 60mm aperature to a 90mm aperature (same as allroad). However, there have been reports that the actual footprint for MY02 headlamp assemblies is different from earlier model years, due to the changes in the hood and bumper design introduced for the MY02 A6. This would mean that MY01 and earlier lamps from the A6 and allroad will not fit on MY02 cars/up. I would not have guessed that penny-pinching VAG would have wanted to spend the $$ asking Hella to redesign and retool for new headlamps for the otherwise minor cosmetic updates introduced for MY02. And just eye-balling them on the cars, they don't seem to have a different profile. But others on this forum have reported that the lamps are no longer interchangable, beginning with this model year.

Default Good info...

Glad you posted this. My tunnel vision had me forgetting the facelift, given that I care mostly about the 4.2 which was not changed in that regard, AFAIK.

The projectors in the Hella A6 headlamps are 70mm, not 90. Hella's 70mm module is used on the new A8 as well. Hella's 90mm projectors are aftermarket lamps. These lamps are smaller than the OE projectors, but the OD of the housing of the aftermarket projectors is 90mm, hence the name. The 70mm OE projectors have a lens dia of 70mm, which gives them their name. Both the 90mm aftermarket and the 70mm OE projector use the H7 bulb. The H1 60mm projectors from the early A6s are used in few cars today. One being the baby Jag X-type.

hella's 70mm range of projectors.
