Dim Fog Lights

Is there anyway to get more lights out of my OEM Fog lights; bulbs, relays? Or must I upgrade the entire system?
The OEM's are worhtless.

IIRC, plenty of discussions of bulb upgrades in Stoney's FAQ - just make sure you don't ...
go beyond like 55 watts, or you'll melt the housings. But 55 watts super whites or plasmas do just fine.

Just remember that they are intended to work in fog, rain, or snow.
Too white or too bright, and they are as useless as highbeam headlights in those situations, as the light will be reflected by the weather and blind you.
Fog lights should light up the sides of the road and the immediate area in front of the car (30 to 40ft). Projector fogs will go a little further. Driving lights tend to be a long range focused beam with very little side projection - much like additional headlights. Of course headlights tend to work best when mounted higher up.
If you want driving lights, technically the location of the present fogs will work against you. They are so close to the ground that they can't do a very good job of being driving lights. Driving lights are usually mounted higher up.

Some info

One word of caution:
If you install a high power bulb you can melt the housing and the connectors. Real mess!
Next time you are in the shop ask the electrical mechanic what he thinks. He may just tell you some stories from others who have done this 'upgrade'.

I tried the silverstars but they weren't any brighter just a slight bit whiter. I actually installe
d an hid kit into my fog lights and they work great. I ran into some fog a while back and with the fog mod I had just the fogs on and they really lit up the road very well cutting through the fog nicely. as far as the light being to bright and becoming useless I would have to say that was not the case with my hid fogs. being too high well....mine are at factory level which are aimed pretty low. I found out that all you need is just a brighter light in the fogs to make them work properly and be of use.
I hope this helps.

I disagree. They're pretty much trim/ego.
If Audi really wanted them to work in fog or snow or rain, they would have enabled them independently of the main headlights. Which screw up visibility in the very conditions you want the foglights on. Of course, Volvo thinks the same way.
But Saab doesn't. I discovered the way foglights are really supposed to work on my first 900...and every one since. BTW, 100W fogs work just fine with yellow lenses in snow fog.

Properly aimed, they do help. I agree though, that they should be wired to work just with
the parking lights.
The problem is that most people don't set them up correctly, and they rarely come from the factory properly set up. Have you had any problems with melting your housing/wiring with the higher wattage bulbs?

Re: I disagree. They're pretty much trim/ego.
I tend to agree with you. The fogs on my 9-3 really light the way, even with the standard 55w bulbs in them. It's a bit disappointing for a car in Audi's calibre to have such a cheap "decorative only" light.
