Default Exhaust question

I am looking to do a minor exhaust mod. Want to establish what will have the biggest effect on performance & what will have biggest effect on sound. I am going to start by replacing either only the mufflers & piping from the resonators, or only the resonators & the piping to the mufflers. How restrictive is the OEM resonator? I am leaning towards just doing from the OEM resonators back, replacing with 2.5" pipes & magnaflow ovals.

Not looking for really loud, just a nice growl under throttle. What would be the sound & performance effects of doing just one or just the other?

Btw, its an 01 (hidden tips) 2.7t 6 speed, APR chip & Darintake so far.

Thanks.

Default Resonator removal = drone at certain speeds

If you replace the resonator with an x-pipe, you will have less of an issue with drone...Or, simply put in a lightweight aftermarket resonator. Either way, you win

Default Re: Resonator removal = drone at certain speeds

Well I wasnt going to remove it all together with either option. I would either leave it as is, replacing pipes and mufflers from there back, or replace the pipes & upgrade the resonators but leave OEM mufflers..

Default I'd imagine the rear mufflers are most of the restriction and sound deadening. >

The middle resonators are probably pretty good flow wise and help keep the drone away.

I think your plan sounds good, just replace the rear mufflers with a straight through type to get some flow and sound.

Default With your mods, minimal effect on hp/tq. Exhaust suggestions...

Several years ago I dynoed 3 times - stock, chip, chip + exhaust. Exhaust added minimal hp/tq. Maybe 5 hp.

Therefore, I recommend to make your choice based on sound/appearance. I would not remove the center resonator unless you replace it with something like 2 individual Magnaflow 4x14 round mufflers. IMO, removing the center resonator is a mistake that will lead to annoying drone. Replace the rears with Magnaflow 5x8x14 (or 18) ovals. Add the tips of your choice.

This set-up gives you good sound, perhaps a bit of performance and is almost exactly the same as a Milltek system. Add some 2.25 or 2.5 tubing from the cat back and your system is as good as any aftermarket system.
