Fading Computer Displays

Fading Computer Displays
I've just reviewed the posts on this topic and they all appear to be on '98's. I think I'm noting fading on my '99's display starting to encroach from the left side. Doesn't appear that way all the time, though. And, right now it's confined to the top quadrant where the audio system data is displayed.
Of course, I just went off warranty 8/6. I've got an extended warranty, but my question to those who've had their modules replaced: how much "surgery" was required to replace the cluster, and did it loosen rattles, etc., when the job was done? And did the dealers remember to correctly re-set the odo?
Thanks to all who can help me out here.

myne was replaced by audi for free on a 1998 about 2 months ago...
it was out of warranty, but they "good willed" it. They reset the odometer, and no rattles to speak of, very happy with the "surgery." you can't tell it was ever done. Good luck

same thing happened on my (former) '99 A4...
fortunately it was replaced under warranty. I was told that even the replacements sometimes faded! Mine never did after it was replaced though.
They actually replaced my entire instrument cluster, not just the trip computer (not sure if they can do just the trip comp). Anyway, there were no rattles afterwards and they did set the odometer correctly...apparently they can get the exact mileage from your ECU.
Good luck!

Re: Fading Computer Displays
Well whaddya know? Mine's just out of manufacturers warranty-but I do have an extended independent one which covers me up to Ł1000.
Once 'heated up' the display fades from the right, but is still just about readable after two or three hours.
Any of you guys think I've got a chance of a warranty fix or goodwill fix if i consult a main dealer, or will they argue that the unit is not sufficiently broken to replace? Could always get on to Audi UK and see what they reckon....
Also how much is it to replace if I get no-where with them?
Cheers.

Fading on both our '98 and '99 A6s
Tom Wood Audi in Indianapolis was not interested in any good will since we did not buy either car from them.
And that's why we shop elsewhere - kind of a Catch-22.

2000 2.7T computer display on back order.
Mine's been on back order for the last month. Seems like the 2.7T and 4.2's are harder to get for some unknown reason.
Mine fades more as the temperature rises...a bit of a problem in Florida.
