front bearing R&R update
OK, I've been under the car and discovered that despite having the sport suspension, my 2001 A6 has steel wheel-bearing housings, so the bearings would be the pressed-in 82 mm kind, rather than the bolt-ons that go with the aluminum housings. Many thanks to BernieBenz and A8CT for advice and suggestions yesterday. Does anyone have anything to add with respect to 1) is the A6 essentially the same as the A4/S4 for bearing replacement? (ref. to Tech write-ups). If not, what are the differences? 2) are there important differences among the tools available -- e.g. Hub Tamer, Hub Shark, Sir Tools B90? Or are they pretty much the same? From what I've discovered, some Hub Tamer 6490s have come onto various markets (e.g. ebay, craigslist) apparently because this model has been superseded by the Hub Tamer Elite. Don't know if there's any reason to prefer one over the other for Audi applications.

Yesterday's post

I have the hub tamer elite but I could have easily gotten the cheaper version.
they changed a couple of things on the "elite" most notably the big horseshoe part is thinner.
In the three times I've used mine, I haven't even used that part.
Just used it today on my BMW....
