Default Gas mileage is horrible! Will higher octane help?

Getting 14.8 in city driving. Mostly stop and go. My wife, a very passive non-aggressive driver, drives car 90% of time. Car just had 30k service. Is this the norm? Would a higher octane fuel help? Can get 100, but I don't think the price of the gas would lead to lower gas costs because it is $3.90 per gallon! Maybe I could just put in 2 gallons per tankful? What do you all think?

Higher octane has nothing to do with gas mileage, and won't help. I get 20-21mpg commuting.

Only keeping the garage door off the hood can help. Ooops, too late. (Sorry, that is a bummer).

Default Sorry. You are just now discovering what everyone else knows:

The A6 is a thirsty vehicle. High octane will do nothing for you. If fuel economy is important, maybe one of those Toyota hybrids is the ticket.

Be glad you don't have a 2.7T.... with a 2.8 you have 'dreamt of gpg' from some of us 2.7T owners

I thought high octane had lower energy density but is easier to burn. Your car is a gas pig.

Default High Octane is actually harder to burn.

That's why you have to use it in the turbo engine, otherwise there would be so much detonation you wouldn't be able to go anywhere

A trip to Clarksville, Tn from south Georgia netted me an average of only 22.9. VW/Audi cars don't typically get the posted sticker mileage.

What oil are you running? Could have a small impact on gas mileage.

Default I don't feel sorry for you at all... I got 4mpg last fillup

but that was in my Nova. I average 18 in the city and near 25 on the highway. I always use premium and 10w30 Mobil 1 full synthetic. I've gone as low as 16mpg in heavy traffic driving.
