<center><img src="http://www.purems.com/images/fullsize/TBKIT004_fs.jpg"></center><p>...Do I call up my Indy to get it done now or hold off some?
The car is at 61K miles.
Not really driving it that much lately.
For curiousity, I asked the service writer the last time it was in for maintenance, and she said 80K.

Spin the wheel! Go buy 50 1 dollar scratch tickets....
if you win at least half your money back, wait until 70k
If you lose more than 25$ do it now =)
or wait for the stimulus check and do it the day you receive the 600 big ones

just do it....it's not the mileage but the age of the belt that concerns me
had mine done at 70k....well the t-stat had a little something to do with that also....8^)

This is a bit of a repost because I've posted something similar, but here goes...
The two factors that I would consider are:
1. How long do you expect to have the car?
2. How much risk are you willing to accept?
Keeping the car for another two years and 40k? Do it now.
Keeping the car for another 100k miles? Wait until 80k.
Keeping the car for another 140k miles and don't mind a little risk? Wait until 100k.
Lazy and don't mind a lot of risk? Do nothing.
Obviously, the last scenerio is almost in jest, but that's exactly what the PO of my A4 did. When I bought it, I immediately did its first timing belt service...at 138k miles.
Oh, and this wouldn't be a 4D4 timing belt post unless I reminded you to do the cam seals, cam plugs and cam adjuster seals at the same time. ;-)

It is uncertain, that's the problem. (more)
none of us knows the actual stats. First note that the failure is rarely th belt itself. The belt breaks when something else seizes or drags, liek the water pump. It may well be that the % of failures before 100k is less than 1%. if that is true, then the "expected value" of a $7k head job is $70, and nto worth the trouble. Unless you face the $7k rebuild.
But maybe its 25% by 100k. That would be E(x) = $1750.
The reality is that the water pump or a tensioner is eventually going to fail anyway, so you will need to do the job, its just a matter of when.
I did mine at 58k when the t-stat went.
I would have gone to 60 or 70 k comfortably.
but i know 3 people who lost motors, or at lest a LOT of valves.

Absolutely true. However...
...regardless of whether or not we have that information, we can all agree that the longer you wait to change the belt, the more chance you have of introducing your valves to your pistons.
Paranoid? Change the belt every 5k.
Apathetic or optimistic? Skip entirely.
Of course, when I say "change the belt" I am referring to a complete service. Changing only the belt itself accomplishes next to nothing.
