HEAVY pedal to the metal...but nothing happened. WHY?
Hey all,
This one really stumped me yesterday and I'm thinking I better just offload/sell the car. BTW, it's an '01 2.7T with Tiptronic.
I was driving in downtown on sidestreets. I was in the right lane and the cars in front of me suddenly braked hard. I had a split decision and had an opening in the left lane that I could safely pull into without cutting anyone off. So I merged left and put on the throttle (I was going approx. 10mph when I had to punch it). When I pushed the pedal down, absolutely nothing happened. No turbo kick-in, nothing! It just kept going about 10-15 mph on kick-down and the revs didn't climb. It was so sluggish that the truck in the left lane was able to pull right up on my tail. This all happened within about 5 seconds. After that, the throttle response was immediate and perfect. ANYBODY HAVE ADVICE ON WHY THE THROTTLE DID THIS????
I've only had the car for 4 months (purchased used) with 32K miles on it and I've had several things go wrong with the car:
1. ABS hydraulic pump / brake booster failure (failed & replaced at 1 month).
2. Center display replacement (bad pixels). (failed & replaced at 2 months).
3. Leak detection pump failure (failed & replaced at 3 months).
4. Bad Xenons / Xenon auto adjust failure (failed & replaced at 1 month).
5. Ignition cranking problem (failed & adjusted at 4 months)
6. Cam Adjuster Seals and Tensioner replacement (replaced at 1 month).
Maybe it's time to offload the car?? It's really too bad because I really like the car when there's nothing wrong with it. And now that all of these things have failed with the car, I'm turning into a hypochondriac when something "seems" strange.
Thanks in advance for your insight and thoughts.

Nope, not this time. And I do know what you're talking about. The brake pedal was never applied...
I was coasting at the time that I needed moderate-to-hard acceleration.

Search, and you'll find TONS of info on this. Basically it's...
..the drive-by-wire throttle programming getting momentarily confused by sudden application of power immediately after the brake. It happens in certain situations, and doesn't seem to have a fix.
I've just learned about how the car responds in those situations, and avoid them whenever possible.
Not a reason (by itself) to sell the car, IMO, but YMMV.

Use the tip in these situations.
Stomp on the pedal in conjunction with a quick upshift followed immedietly by a quick downshift, works for me. I used to do this more often in the 2.8, it's a rare need on the 4.2 but I've done it in a 2.7T and it works even better.

Re: HEAVY pedal to the metal...but nothing happened. WHY?
What I have discovered is that a quick double pump of the accelorator will help. It also appears that the how quickly one steps on the gas tells the DBW how fast you want to go. I normally slowly depress the accelorator on 02 AR Tip, while my wife always stomps on her 01 A6 2.7 Tip, and she never has that tip lag. Her A6 has always seemed a little quicker, but it's lighter too. Anyone notice this?

Yes, DBW reads the speed as well as the depth of pedal movement.
The Tip has over 200 possible programs for shifting. From economy, to max get up and go. Again, it reads the throttle inputs to decide what you want. All it takes is a few miles of driving in one style or another to reset it.
