Ooooook. Obviously, there's a fair bit of bullsh!tting going on here.
Checking on edmunds.com I see my car at just under $5k trade in and that's by giving it an "average" rating.
I love dealers. Really. I do.

Yikes! $5000 trade in? I hope my car is never worth that little considering what I paid for it!!! =o) What sorta mileage do you have on it? What are you trading it for?

It's got 108000 miles at this point. I'm looking at...
...Saab 9-3 Convertibles (because I love repair bills). I'm sure that'll bring all the negative comments out.
My biggest concern with the Saab is how I'm going to transport lacrosse gear with such a small trunk.
I know what you mean about resale. I paid $20k for the A6 four years and 63k miles ago.

At your mileage , all the dealer can do it wholesale it, then the car will be bought by some indy
dealer who will try to make $200-$500 off of it...They offered what they couold, may be you could make them move up to $3000 but thats about it.

I could see you doing a private sale it for $7000 to $8K
No one here would pay that much but Im sure an "unaware" person would buy it near that amount just on the looks alone. I'll admit, you do have one of the nicest 2.8 around with tasteful mods.
Or just keep it and drive it to the ground. The C5 is timeless.

Anything with more than about 70K miles gets wholesaled. Can't get the preferential used car
interest rates nor extended warranties once you hit around 65K miles.
Anything with more than 100K miles is sled lot material, and the wholesalers won't give the dealer squat for it.
Always better to sell the car yourself once the car is past 60K miles.

Really? I would think that AW would have people who would appreciate the mods.
Any Joe off the street probably won't understand Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks, or Allroad HIDs, or Moven SP-10s.

with all respect...we are sensible people...
why would one expect to get "full value" from a dealer? How can they make money if they give you "full value"?
They know their costs of doing business probably better than most any business.
They offer you $2500 because they know:
1. They can not sell the car to THEIR customer base.
2. The must make a profit on every deal. If they know they can't sell the car profitably to their market, then they wholesale it to a lower level used car lot. They may get 2800.00..or even 2500.00 just to break even..because they are making the profit on the sale of the new car.
The dealer looks at a used car trade as part of the new car sale. How often have you ever heard of a new car dealer buying a used car from an indiviidual without a new car being sold as part of it? Rarely..why?..they don't want the cars.
Its soooooo simple. If you want the most for you car..sell it yourself PERIOD. :-)
