If VW wants to rival Audi... what's wrong with that? Remember, in Europe they don't look at VWs as we look at them, or even Audis for that matter.
If you own a company, or the company you work for decides to start a new division, or even an entirely new company, that directly competes with your existing product lines, that's one of the oldest tricks in the book... in markets that can support enough players, why not be your own competition?

Out of 6 cars the A4 was a close second to the BWM and the Passat was dead last, yet it was the most expensive car. MT's commnet was right on " it would be like buying a $40,000 Camary when you could get a much sportier Lexus for less money - why would anyone want it".

with the exception of only one or two engines. If you are talking SUVs where the VW Toureag will be very similar to the Audi Offroad and Porsche Cayenne then that is somewhat different. Those SUVs will be less than 50% similar, though. My guess is 40-45% similar. Besides the upcoming BMW models (new, reintroduced and redesigned) are ugly as **** due to being designed by that son of a bitch Chris Bangle. I can't imagine any upcoming Audi models (new, reintroduced or redesigned) will be anywhere near as ugly as any of the upcoming BMW models. Those ****ty photoshopped pics of the redesigned A6 as of late are vastly different (but not totally so) from what the redesigned A6 will actually look like.

I know this sounds a bit snobby (most people in their right minds would agree with me, though) but I would also much rather pay big bucks for an M5 (E39 only), E55 AMG (W210 and W211) or S6/RS6 (C6 S6 only). The reason I say C6 S6 only is because the C5 S6 is avant only in North America (how lame). C6 S6 will be sedan only in North America. That is because North American sales of the C5 S6 are quite a bit below Audi's expectations largely because it is avant only. Admittedly, the recession (worsened on Tuesday 9-11-01) is also to blame. But that is true with most cars. Oh, with the C6 A6, there will be a much more significant difference with the A6 4.2 vs S6 vs RS6 in terms of total performance, price and feature content. The difference in price of the S6 vs RS6 will be somewhat lower (though still reasonable) than the A6 4.2 vs S6. As for E39 only with the M5, that is only because I hate the E60 5 Series. I love all W211 E Class cars but the only W210 E Class that I love is the E55 AMG. All other W120 E Class cars are decent at best, IMO.

beginning with the redesigned A4, A3 and A6. Eventually this will happen with all Audi models. However, this will not happen with the A8 until it's next redesign for 2010 or 2011. The redesigned A8 and new Phaeton are only 20-30% similar. I should mention that Audi's will continue to share one or two engines only with comparable VW models. That will probably change sooner or later but no earlier than the early 2010s.
