I have non HP2 calipers (2 pad design). Would a cost effective BBK upgrade be to convert to HP2

It would be pretty effective. Buy a set of used HP2's, a set of lightweight rotors, and
a decent set of pads/new fluid. If you can score a set of those rotors used (like 40v-V8,) then you should come in under a grand.

What are you trying to accomplish?
BBKs are costly, and generate wheel clearance issues ( no matter how big the brakes, those 18" snow tires will stop like crud int he white stuff, ya know.....)
So what are you trying to do? Unless you are on the track, or driving down enormous hills, hard, tires are the limiting factor in stopping.
Even on the track, pad compounds will make substantial differences, but will be difficult when cold. You can swap.
The HP2s are nice, but not that much more area. better design, yes.....
And HP2s will nto provide porsche level pedal feel and modulation, if that's what you want. I had them on my S4 and have them on my S6.No comparo with the cheapest boxster, for instance.
