Perhaps he meant another component, like CV boots perhaps?

Default There actually is a ball joint that is screwed into the rack and pinion...

I think your mechanic wants to replace the whole tie rod end assembly (number 12, 14 and 15 in QCRAZY's exploded rack and pinion view). If you look at number 12, there is a ball joint inside the big hex nut (on the left of the assembly). You can not see this joint on the car because it is covered by a rubber boot (number 13). Usually the inner joint does not fail.

Default I replaced one of mine.....

...there is an inner and outer tie rod joint. If the outer is trashed and you can't get it off, you can damage the inner one while you are pulling/hacking on it.

I had a slight clicking in my steering, troubleshoot it down to the driver's side inner tie rod end, had it replaced, and it was cured!

Here it is, the inner is everything from the light color lock nut to the right....see the ball joint all the one on the end? It screws into the steering rack.

I buggered up my inner joint when I torque the *hit out of it....but never got it off....probably screwed up the nylon bushing then....

Replaced everything with the boot and all was well again.

You can buy the whole joint on ebay for about $110 as I recall.

Default Technically, it consists of a tie rod end and the rack extension;....

...of which only the end is sold seperately. So saying one is replacing the "inner joint" is not correct since you have to replace the whole tie rod assembly at that point.

It's probably 1.0 or 1.5 hours time, plus you need alignment then
