That doesn't make it a good idea. A4 1.8t manual says 105k for a timing belt.

I think they do it because they think they can get away with it and it allows a little extra profit.

Default I think they finally realized that a bunch of people were not making it that far, they dropped it to

75,000mi intervals from 2004+.

No doubt. But the point is that Audi recommendations consider more than what is best for the car.

I think the specs assume the use of synthetic oil. 10,000 miles on regular oil is crazy

Default I have an 02 3.0Q and...

I got my car at 36K miles.
I checked the service records and there had been 3 oil changes (at 10K each) at the Audi dealer.
At 36K I had the oil changed as soon as I got teh car, assuming 6K since last oil change per records and the oil was BLACK. Whats worse is that looking down from oil filler cap, the sludgish color on the internal was obvious. I have been changing at 5-6K using Castrol Syntec since.
To compare, I got my 2004 Mapzda MPV with 39K miles and it has a FORD engine. The internal are still brand new and no sign of sludge, browning of metals etc. The owner did regular oil changes (Dino oil, every 3K). Van now has 50K and the engine internals look prestine.
