Default ignition coil on '03 A6 3.0

Hi everybody,

Yesterday, my '03 A6 3.0 started to shake while driving and check engine light came on. I scanned for codes and pulled P0303, which reads as misfire in cylinder 3. I suspect ignition coil, since I had the same symptoms around a month ago, but with P0304 - misfire in 4 cylinder. My question is - is it normal for that model year (2003) to have two ignition coils go out in one month or there can be another problem with ignition system?

Default It does not matter...its common.

I've gone through 3 in 4 months. They are all 4 years old with 135K miles on them. This is why I carry a spare. At $22.00 per coil for OEM, (carson@riversideaudi.com) what have you got to loose?

Default Yes, but Audi doesn't make coil paks - they buy them from a supplier they have beaten-up to cut

costs as much as possible...there have been coil pak issues with VAG products in the past.

Default How to replace it?

How can I replace the coil?
I've ordered a Bantley manual, but I cannot wait till it comes.

Default Should be simply if they are similar to the 2.8L 30V engine - there should be a wiring connector

that attaches to the coil; simply remove this and then the coil is attached to the valve cover with 1 or 2 bolts/screws/fastener of some sort - remove them and simply pull it up and out. May have to take some stuff off to get a clear shot at the coil, but should be pretty straighforward. When installing the new one, make sure you hear/feel it "click" onto the sparkplug; re-attach everything and you're good to go.

Default Problem has returned after replacing the coil(+)

Hi again,

I've replaced the coil on cylinder 3 and took it for a test drive. The car was running fine for several minutes, but then RPM started to jump and car started shaking again. MIL light came on again. When I've stopped, I could smell something like burnt rubber. Interesting thing is that when put transmission into P or N, RPMs don't jump as much and car is shaking less. I am going to take it to indy tomorrow, but wonder if anybody had the same problem before and can tell what can I expect?

Thanks.
