Looking to sell the avant and move to a 2.7T or 4.2. Advantages / Disadvantages to either??

Theres not much to add....
4.2 Pro's:
Reliable V8, Fender Flairs. <b>4.2</b>
2.7T Pro's:
Tuneable 2.7T engine, manual option.
4.2 Con's.
Limited tunability, Tiptronic only.
2.7T Con's.
Warranty Violations (if you do tune the engine), Less reliable, Turbo's (when directly compared to a V8).
Basically, you have to ask, do I want a dependable automatic under warranty, or do I want a ***** out tuned engine which will void my warranty and possibly diminish the longevety of the turbo's. The other option is to find a manual and not mod the engine which will be more of a "drivers" vehicle and still be covered under warranty.
I could care less about opinions from my next comment, owning this car without a warranty or a warranty that is void is stupid. I'll still see you at 130mph, because they all go that fast.

If the 4.2 and 2.7T were the same price, and you wanted an auto(tip) of course...
...you would get a 4.2. But SURPRISE they are not the same price for equivalent milage. 4.2 will cost a few grand more.
