Perhaps slipping isn't quite the correct term, it just feels hesitant, like it's not shifting as quickly as it should. It doesn't rev up like it isn't engaging the next gear, it just seems sluggish about it. And when shifting it into or out of park it also seems to take a little longer than I feel it should. (2-3 seconds) I'll see about getting the codes checked today or tomorrow.

@SloopJohnB: That's the kit that they list when I pull up my vehicle. Does the info below look good, or should I make a call before ordering?

This is the application guide listed on that product page:

So I got the computer scanned last night, looks like I had 4 codes, 1 was an O2 sensor, 1 was a misfire on 1 cylinder & 2 were AIR PUMP issues. After looking around online & then under the hood I'm fairly sure that at least the air pump codes are related to a torn vacuum/air line. Any chance that stuff could result in sluggish shifts? I'll be fixing that today (hopefully) and posting results. I also just ordered an ebay vag com cable ($19 shipped) and hope to get some use out of it. Worst case I'm out $19 and can say for sure how well it works for other's reference.

It's a good way to see what's going on with your car, but you won't be able to do anything except read codes (can't erase them to see if they're fixed or if they come back). There could be other limitation, but I am not versed in the Ross-Tech software specifics.

Default That should work with the older Ross-Tech versions

The free software is limited, but still lets you pull/erase codes & view things like the trans temp (passive readouts).

The full (paid) software version is required for things like adaptations or setting readiness.

Did you scan the TCU or just the ECU?
Doesn't make sense to skip the TCU.

well the codes he has might cause him to think the trans is slipping, and its actually an engine issue ?

i would prefer to do a regular service - just change the fluid that comes out when you clean the pan and filter. See if things improve. Or have you already been down that road?

Agreed. But he is ready to dump snake oil in his trans, and he had the scanner hooked up. I would think it might make sense to look for a few trans codes.
