Default Mann or Fram oil filter? Castrol 5W-40 for a 2001 A6 4.2L

Which oil filter should I get? I usually buy castrol synthetic oil 5W-40 for my 2001 A6 4.2L

Thanks,

jcy

Definitely the Mann filter if your store stocks it. Most advance auto parts do for a few dollars more than Fram.

MANN...there's no question. I've been using their filters for over 14 years on my Audi vehicles and have never had an issue.

I wasn't aware there was even a Fram filter for the 4.2.
In any case, get the Mann.
Until/unless amsoil comes up with a synthetic filter.

There are many fine filters. FRAM is not one of them. There was a take-apart test done some years back, and FRAM was in a class by itself. Not in a good way.

Bosch, MANN, Mahle, WIX (maybe the best) all great.

NAPA gold = WIX

I agree with this 100% and would add the Puralator which is easily available at Advance Auto - at least this applies to the 2.7T, not sure if they have one for the 4.2.

When I do oil I look for the Mann/Mahle at Advance, and then usually grab the Puralator if they don't have the correct item in stock. The Puralator is a smaller filter, but I've never had an issue and I have 270,000 on my car with oil changes every 10,000 miles.

And take a look at the Rotella T6 oil. Seems to be the oil of choice for many of the turbo Porsche crowd, and it's $22/jug at Wallyworld.

Napa Gold (Wix) here. It's stamped with "Made in Germany". Will probably go Mann next time just to switch it up.
