Default Minor oil leak

I replaced the oil cooler gasket back in March, and am still finding small accumulations of oil on the top of the belly pan. The volume has definitely decreased since replacing the oil cooler gasket.

When I was changing the oil last night, the bottom of the oil pan has some oil on it with higher concentrations near the edges. The accumulation on the belly pan lines right up with oil pan.

I am thinking I'll replace the lower oil pan gasket, but is there something else I should be checking? It seems like a pretty straightforward replacement, can anyone confirm?

2001 A6 2.8 w/ 77k on the clock

Thanks!

Default That's an unlikely place for oil to leak.

Suggest you spend more time looking for the leak before doing anything. Look up at the engine rather than down at the belly pan.

Default When the crank seal leaks, oil finds its way EVERYWHERE because of wind....

Change that first..

Default Yup.. That's what happened with my oil level sensor leak. It went all over the sway bar, etc.

My crank seal is leaking as well, but not enough to drip.

That's what the belly pan is for, so you can't find the leak and to keep the oil off the road.

How big of a job is that? If I have the right graphic pulled up in the Bentley, it looks like a big one.

Usually, most of the wind is in the driver's seat.

No one (with smarts) changes rotary shaft seals any more! Questionable advice.

Default check for possible RMS leak...............................

we had an oil leak recently on our 2.7, the oil was sitting in the area right near the oi pan. One shop advised it was the upper pan gasket that was leaking, took it to another shop that was closer and $400.00 cheaper. Turned out to not be the pan gasket but the Rear main seal. Look to see if your getting oil around the front of the tranny seeping through the bell housing and inspection points. Ours was leaking to the point of 1qt per month.

1 Qt/mo! That's gross! An observant owner w/o belly pan would have fixed early with $5. snake oil.
