My impression on an A6 competitor . . .
Had the opportunity to drive an E500. I will say that is is a freaking rocket. I thought my 4.2 was fast. This thing is a horse.
Would I get one? No. Here is why. First, I like to accelerate smartly, but not too crazy. Whenever I started from a stop light in the E500, the rear tires would break loose. Even when I was taking it easy. Second, my job requires that I drive into the inner city. No one has ever recognized my 4.2 (a great thing). I would fear that the E500 would quickly be up on blocks, with someone proudly wearing the hood ornament as a necklace. Third, the interior. Plastic, plastic, plastic. And what is with that illumiated green cluster on the headliner??? The dash is crap compared to the Audi. Fourth, it feels sloppy. I am biased since I have the H-Sport sways, but I still think the E500 feels loose. In any turn, my 4.2 would kill it. Fifth, I felt detached from the road. My 4.2 feels lower and more responsive. Maybe another consequence from the aftermarket suspension?
Engine - no queston the E500 is great. I was able to squeal the tires at 10 mph. That's a lot of power. But as far as an every day car that I need to be a sheep in wolf's clothing . . . I'll happily keep my 4.2.
That being said, go to my post in the Chicagoland forum if you are interested in purchasing this E500. It's a long story, but I will gladly depart with it for $40K.

https://forums.audiworld.com/lrqc/msgs/22869.phtml</a

Don't forget it costs more and..
it really has a better transmission and engine.
As for the rear tires breaking loose - I never had that problem but then I did not switch off the electronic controls. If it was a concern I would have considered a 4 wheel drive.
I bought my A6 because it was the best for me at the time. If I was looking for a more 'prestigious' car I would have bought the E500.
By the way I have the ML500 ;-)

I have an E55 and a DiPPed allroad
While the E55 (similar to the E500 except even more powerful) is great, in foul weather, I rather take the allroad as it's easier to put all the power to good use when accelerating and cornering.
I would never fishtail in the E55 as the electronics will cut the power, however, when I'm in a rush on rainy days, the allroad is faster getting me from point a to point b.
I like the E-class interior very much and find the chassis and transmission very solid. However, the A6 actually is a little roomier in the back. The E, even the E500, is much more expensive, especially when you add up all the luxurious options (many of which are not available in the A6).
I'm really looking forward to putting on the H-sports next week to clean up the allroad's handling.

dude, a NYC taxicab can bark the tires at WOT from 10 mph too.....
its what happens when you put a powerful V8 in heavy RWD car with alot of inertia.
Also, RWD cars seem to provide more of that push/torque feeling without necessarily being the actual case. I've played around with many an e500 before I was modded and it was always pretty dead on even with the Audi actually pulling somewhat better in 3rd gear.
It's not a race anymore.
