Default Is my transmission in Limp Mode? HELP PLEASE

My Audi is a 2002 A6 Quattro w sportronic transmission.

Driving home from work my transmission felt like it was starting to slip. RPM's were up but my speed was dropping. Soon enough I was able to do no more than about 20MPH and i'm pretty sure that I was stuck in 3rd gear. I was close to home so I got into town and pulled to the closest legal parking spot. As soon as I came to a stop all of the gear selections on the console turned to solid block red and the check engine light came on. I was able to get it into the spot, shut it down and have someone come to get me. Is this a common issue? Can anyone tell me what caused this and how I can resolve it? Detail that might be important: it was snowing by my job and the road had a kind of sleet on the ground...maybe 2 inches or so. The highway was just wet and the car drove 40 minutes without a problem.

I have two jobs and my holiday shopping is not done...I'm hoping for good news...but I'll take any news that gets me in the right direction. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Jason

you may have wetted some electrical parts. I think your car will be okay tomorrow morning if it warms up a little bit.

Default Thread jack - i see you have the instrument cluster rings as a mod to do...

Are you going to make your own, or can they be bought? Curious as to how you'd approach that

that sounds great....i'm sure hoping that it will be that simple.

Just out of curiosity....why would Audi place something electrical in an area where it can be exposed to wetness?

Default More details please...

MIleage on the car? General condition otherwise? Regular maint. performed? The tranny is supposed to have a lifetime fill of fluid, however what I've been able to glean here is that some agree w/this and other just laugh.

If your car is high mileage, perhaps theres a area that allows moisture in that was originally sealed on the car.

Were you diving thru ice/snow? Maybe there's an acculm. of that?

Just some thoughts... I found it very informative to visit "Stoney's Links" on our cars, and perhaps you can get some insight there as well. I'm a realatively new A6 owner [19 months] and am not as up on the maint of our cars as many on this forum. However that "Stoney's Links" is a real wealth of info.
