Believe what you want. The latest E class has quite the reputation for being unreliable and Mercedes
has acknowledged it, so it's not heresay. You must be basing your information off the old cars that were built to a standard, not a price point like the MB products.

As you can see in my few minutes on just one Lexus forum, the GS is hardly devoid of problems. Another example here:
<a href="http://forums.autoweek.com/thread.jspa?forumID=9&threadID=31176&messageID=707 333">"recall"</a>
Toyota has built plenty of duds (I used to be a Toyota fan, so I keep an eye on them), and ES300 owners still face looming engine oil sludge problems which Toyota only grudingly acknowledges (at least 3.3 million V6 and 4 cylinder engines) after growing consumer revolt. Any Lexus remains a device built by man, and as such, will be flawed. Cruise the forums for the same vintage vehicle as yours and you'll find all kinds of issues.
<a href="http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news02/toyota_sludge.html">"gloop"</a>
As for depending on reliability reports, check out this spin, and you may want to rethink about believing everything you read.

If being problem free was so important to you, then I question why you would even consider the Germans at all, since that has not been their forte for some years now.
Best I can tell, you bought a used complex car with a lower than average resale value. That always entails risk. Want a car that doesn't break? Get the newest, simplest, lightest car you can find to be your "beater." Your previous experience with MB and BMW is not be valid with today's complex cars.
In any case, I'm responding to you not so much in the hopes of making you see the light, as to inject some reality into this thread so that forum newcomers are not misled:-)
