need advice re: roof racks... yakima vs. thule for snowboards...
goin to Mammoth this weekend and really starting to consider throwin some jack towards a rack system. Has anybody used the Yakima system and been able to put 4 boards on top? I have a large, wider than normal board (173cm)and my other friends would likely all have normal width/size boards- mebbe 2 wide boards/2 normal boards.
how is the clearance on the top of the A6 (curved roof and all) when putting in 4 boards? Is this the best way to go or is there another system that works better. the Thule fork system kinda scares me, I think the Yakima looks more secure, and just plain looks better but I want to be sure it will work before I drop the bills on it.
What kind of set ups do you have? what do you use them for (what can you use them for)? how well does it work? any warnings/suggestions?

I have no clue, how to put 173cm wide board. :)
I have installed thule on top of Avant. Even without the extentions it clears my bindings (K2 Clicker). If you have a sedan you might want to put extentions. Extentions are included with the roofrack.
I preffer Thule, because it has sqare bars and the attachments will not twist backward. Also the attachment nuts are inside, so bad guy cannot unscrew it without opening lock. I think Yakima uses round bars and nuts outside of the attachment.
I do not like the wind noice in Thule especially on the hight speed.
I also had really bad experiance with Barrecrafters (one of the boards failed off and was totaled by the following track!!!).

I use a Thule, can't remember the model, but it works awesome.
It has custom fitted rubber feet for the A6. I use it for 2 mountain bikes (velo vise holder), so I'm not sure how much a snowboard/ski would bounce. I assume this is your concern. The Audi OEM rack is made by Thule also.
It was a pain to setup initially, but now I keep it in one piece. It probably takes about 7 mins to put on or take off.

For Yakima, call Supergo Bikes in Santa Monica, ask for Gabe and tell him...
the korean guy with the allroad referred you. Might be good for some % off MSRP.
Also, LAallroad was selling his racks and he's right here in LA.

Get one of those coffin-looking things for the roof...it'll keep all your gear clean and nice...
I have vowed to never use another "rack"...I hate all that crap that gets into the bindings when they sit up on the roof.
Currently we are doing the "ski sack through the rear seat trick" and it is working very well, but it may not work as well for snowboards.
That ski-sack is excellent, very easy to use and keeps things tidy while being very easy to put back away when done with it
