New Car & Driver issue BASHED the quality of the BMW X5 during their long term test.......
Doors wouldn't shut, cheap plastic trim peeling, warped rotors, and the one that cracked me up was they couldn't start the car once. Had to wiggle shifter, etc to finally get it to start. Had the X5 to dealer numerous times and talked about being charged alot.
Should've bought an Allroad or something else!

My business partners owns one (3.0i), and it has NOT been a model of reliability.
On the other hand, they almost ended up in a Chevy Blazer - and overall they are very happy with the X5. The gremlins have been mostly electronic and not disabling...but there have been several of them, and not all are resolved.
When I ride in it, I feel really great about the quality of the interior in the A6, everything is much nicer (styling, materials...) in the Audi.
Of course, they are happy with it because when they're not driving it, they're cruising around in their '02 Boxster S.
Now they're "pressuring" me to get an RS6, what terrible partners eh? However, I'm starting to settle into the idea of getting an S6 and a Mini - that would be my idea (as of tonight...) of the perfect lineup as it might leave enough money left to make mortgage payments on that place I bought from Wireless.

I think it was the March Automoblie Magazine, in which the reviewers
are quoted as saying they really like the BMW, and would like it even better, once "we figure out what it is"....

Our workers can build 'em as well as anyone
I just have to sound off on this one. The X5 is only assembled in North America, the components are mostly shipped in from Germany. The management is German and the engineering is German. If you have quality problems, THAT is where they come from. In industry after industry, foreign management has been able to come here and get world-class results with American workers. All of the Japanese manufacturers have achieved the same quality levels here that they have in Japan. Why? Same engineering and management techniques. I used to work in manufacturing; now I'm in software. If you really want to see people who don't know how to manage for quality - check out the software business.
