Default New car work-up/tune-up advice

Hi. New 2000 A6 2.7T.....

1. Vibration is from off balance wheels and a tire with a "bleb": BF Goodrich gForce KDW.... anyone get warranty support from BF Goodrich?

2. Can a 245/50-16 fit (on the non-sport 4.2 16X8 spoke wheels...previous owner upgraded from the sport wheel) in the trunk? It looks close....an original is in there now.....eagle tire. I never like the OEM tires...

3. I want to do a dealer transmission flush (the full deal)...ignoring the cost for a minute, the local porche guy says that in his mostly BMW experience, once you miss the ~30k period, the "rough" stuff in the tranny is needed for the gears to work well....once flushed he has seen BMW's slip (auto trans...my car has a tip). This has me highly confused (I read the faq others have links to, thanks...). Basically, my car is at 49k and probably never had a tranny flush....my 1993 tranny on my UrS4 went up...so I want to "baby" my tranny....ideas are all welcome?

4. Anyone use iridium spark plugs in a 2.7T (Denso)? Comments?

5. There is a little bit of seapage (tiny) at the rear CV seals...is this a normal A6 thing? I mean small...some near the bleed ports/holes. It looks normal/planned.

Great car...moved up from an S60T5M 2001...not missing it at all.

JCB

HX:

1992 E36 318is (great suspension...no power)
1997 tropic green A4 auto (what a cool shade... ;-) )
1993 UrS4 green (all time best seats)
2001 Volvo S60T5M (good seats...lousy suspension)
2000 A6 2.7T tip (wow)

1. Depends on where you got the tires. If you got them new with the car from a dealer you'll have to deal with the dealer and maybe Goodrich (Goodrich may or may not replace them, they probably will if the bleb is a sidewall separation and doesn't look like a curb biff...is there road rash on the wheel near the bleb?). One note...I buy my new tires from discount tires.com and also the road damage warranty from them, so far it's gotten (bad grammar but whatcha gonna do?) me three new tires...Dunlop SP9000 tires and yes I'm not happy with that but the tire is a good compromise.

2. Highly recommend the transmission flush...and it is expensive, around $150 for the synthetic trans fluid alone. But I've decided to do our 4.2 every 30K, especially since the OEM trans went south at 32K. (It wouldn't reverse, worked fine in Drive/forward gears...could have been electronic but I think it was hydraulic/leaking servo). MUCH cheaper than a $13K transmission replacement when Audi won't cover it.

5. Seepage from CV seals? I don't understand...constant velocity joints are generally covered/sealed with rubber boots and should have zero seepage, perhaps a little trace on the axle shafts protruding from either end of the boot...you might have to further explain or clarify this.

Just a little from either end of the "boot" on the CV covers....as you surmised.

I'll check the BFG website...no scuff at the bleb...it is in the tread...not the sidewall....midsection....0.5 out of round was what was said at the tire shop (independent).

My dealer wants 350 for the whole tranny fluid change...the local porche/bmw/audi/ferrari type wants 300....I figure go with the place that will replace the tranny if the "fix" screws things up....

Default Get the tranny fluid/filter replaced

The Porsche guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The tranny needs dirty oil to operate properly if the 30K service is missed? I want some of what he's smokin'! ;-)

Procedure on how to change the fluid and filter
