Octane question

Octane question
I was under the impression that running higher octane gas has no benefit unless car/computer is designed to take advantage of it.
I noticed folks run higher octane occassionally and wondered if there were any real benefits?
If so, what would be the recommendation to get the higher octane (no access to anything higher than 92 around here)--does that stuff-in-a-can called 104+ help?
TIA

Under extreme conditions (racing and/or desert)
the engine will get hot enough that only higher octane will allow you to tap the full (stock or otherwise) potential of the engine without timing being retarded. It won't give any more power than the programming allows, but it will give you that full power over a wider range of conditions.
The canned stuff is rarely strong enough to make a difference, and depending on ingedients, could harm portions of the fuel system and turbos.

i believe that stuff in the can is toulene...some of the S4 guys use it for the track
there'a a big debate there regarding octane...if you run a search, you'll find plenty of hits...
According to dyno charts...Stage 3 S4s w/ higher octane gas will push more hp...

Re: Octane question
In my experience, engines with higher compression or turbos like our Audi's can benefit greatly from using a higher octane fuel.. It is true that only a certain amount of added octanes will help and any more than that is a waste.. like running straight 100 is more than the motors need and anything over 94 or 95 is probably a waste unless you have had an ECU program specifically designed for it. The 104+ additive you mention will boost your performance some but it contains metal elements that are harmful to turbos. ( I forget the name of the culprit but while on a racing team back in the 90's we used this stuff in our engine and when they tore down the turbo it showed melted metal bits on the ceramic blades that were not there with plain racing fuel). There are some additives that are turbo safe, read the label. Mostly the gain is moderate from these products. Try a blend of 100 racing gas with your 92 pump and see what you think. In order for the car to know it has a higher octane gas in it, the computer must sense it and advance the timing accordingly. This can take several starts so if you want to, remove a battery terminal or 15 seconds or so and refasten it. You will have to reset your radio code but the ECU will be reset and will adjust to the new fuel faster while improving performance immediately.

Hi-jack: care to explain your name? I once met a "famous" individual who couldn't use his own
name so he called himself "Uncle Noname". Are you related?
