Oil Level Warning
The other day I was on my way back from a 600 mile trip. I had gone about 500 miles so far and the oil level warning came on. I pulled off at the next exit and checked the dip stick. The oil level was too low to register on the stick. I left the hood up for about 5 minutes while I unpacked the trunk looking for the spare quart of Mobil 1, but it was not to be found. After considering the options of buying whatever I could find at the gas station/convenience mart, I checked the level again. Now it looked fine. I started the engine and the warning did not appear, nor has it since.
What I found especially puzzling is I had just stopped at a rest area 20 minutes earlier for about 10 minutes. The freeway was straight and level. Where did the oil go and why didn't it do that on the 600 mile outbound leg?
In preparation for the trip I had the oil changed at the dealer the week before (first oil change at 5000 miles). I checked the oil level afterward and it was fine. Since the manual showed oil capacity at 7.3 quarts, I supplied 8 quarts of Mobil 1, but one of the quarts was returned unopened. Do you do-it-yourselfers
usually add that last 0.3 quarts?
Anyone else have a similar situation?

I usually put in ~1/2 quart less than the "capacity"...
the dealer puts it all in...but usually overfills it...there must be some oil that is difficult to get out...when I put in 0.5 quart less, it works out perfectly.

2.7 Oil Capacity
Hmmm, my 2002 Owner's Manual shows the following on page 305:
2.7 7.3 quarts of oil
3.0 6.6 quarts of oil
4.2 8.0 quarts of oil
I'm gathering this is different from previous years. Since I have an 02 2.7t I thought I should provide 8 quarts, but with the Finman adjustment, providing 7 quarts should be about right.

Well. it looks like three Audi sources report three different values
The manual reports 7.3 quarts for the 2.7t
The Audiusa website reports 6.3 quarts
The service department at my dealer reports 6.9 quarts, which agrees with figure you gave.
I don't really mind the difference between 6.9 and 7.3, but I do care if it is 6.3 vs. 7.3 quarts. I'll go with your figure unless someone else can cloud the issue a bit more. Thanks.

Yeah, the capacity is 7.3-7.4 qts with a filter change. I usually provide
7 qts at oil/filter change, and top off with extra at home. If I happen to have the .3-.4 qt available I will bring that in with the new stuff.
