Output shaft to rear diff leaking again 2000 2.8 30v
Well I guess its been about a year and was frustrated to smell the oily burning of the drip on to my exchangers.
Last time I got a seal from Audi even though everything i read said I needed to change the rear assembly. I put the seal in and about a year later she is dripping again ..
This one is a real pain .. Last time i took the downpipes and exchangers off to get at it. Anyone done this with the exchangers in place ? is there enough room to get in there ? i may spring for the whole assembly this time.
Any tips ? i saw an online vid about it once and even those guys dropped the exchangers.

I've read about someone doing that on an A8. On the A6 I think you have to drop the rear part of the exhaust at the very least so you can push the cats aside slightly with the play you get from the flex pipes. This allows the flange to slide down between the cats. (Don't overdo it or your flexpipes will leak after)
BTW, I replaced this seal once with the whole exhaust off. But since I had a transmission put in recently, the cast aluminum heat shield that protects the mess is missing! At least one of the four assembly bolts is also missing now and the seal is leaking pretty bad. Can someone let me know what the part number is on that heat guard please? Internet searches have turned up nothing. Also I would really like to know what size those 4 bolts are that bolt the flange assembly in place.
