Overheating 4.2 2002
I thought the car was over heating because of a leak somewhereof coolant but come to find out it's not. My indy told me that the leak was do to the over heating and not the cause. He suggested it could be the thermostat, water pump or a block in the radiator. He wanted 2000.00 just to check out the problem and keep it for two weeks.
The guy who sold it to me told me he replaced the water pump less than 10,000 mile ago. Luckily he repairs audis for a living so I'm taking it back to him and he will give me a good deal and fix a couple of minor other issues while its in the shop. Any ideas or issues like this one with anyone in the past?

Does it overheat even when sitting? (i.e. idling, not in motion.) If so, I would def. say...
thermostat. Also, are your cooling fans operational? By that I mean are the electrics active, and is the clutch on the engine-driven fan holding?

Hard to tell without knowing where the coolant is leaking from, and...
...of course the indy is going to charge you $$ to lok at it, since some of the suspect components are buried in there. Sounds like you already have a good plan, which is to go back to the guy who sold yuo the car. Perhaps you can work with him, and learn a thing or two about your engine.

I didn't have time to test it as I took it into his shop today. I turned on the heat and cruised over there at about 60 mph. Its about 30 miles to the shop and although the car ran hot it never over heated completely. We'll; see what he finds.
He is rebuilding RS6's right now. He bought two salvaged with reletively minor frontend damage and a third that has a clean title. I askede how much he paid for one of the salvaged RS6s and he told me 36 K. Salvaged or not a sought after car...
