Paint problems
My '95 A6 has little scratches on the surface of the paint. I have talked to variouse people and they have told me that it is only the clearcoat. They also mentioned that a good buffing would take care of this problem. Is this because of "aging", bad weather or is this a factory fault. It is really obviouse and makes the car look bad. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions that could help me. I live in florida so where do i go?

Unlikely that it's a defect. Paint does age and weather. How it's (more)
cared for, etc. all affect what a 6 old car's paint job might look like. (I.e., grit in towels used to dry a car can leave small scratches.) Dark colors seem more likely to show small scratches.

Re: Also, never wash the car when the paint is hot to the touch - cracks clearcoat.
I've heard this statement made quite often. However in my experience it doesn't make any difference. I've had clearcoat on the last 6 cars that I have owned w/o these problems. From what I know about paints and coatings I'd say that there is a surface prep or formulation problem here.

The wrong cloth can ruin a finish. Cumulative effect.
Some paint is more soft than others. The wrong diapers ( if that is used ) can scratch. People often push too hard/use wrong wax choice or application methods.
The British shop I used to work at, had many an abused and neglected car pass through the stalls. I would rescue the paint on the interesting ones until people started to approach me to do other cars. Turned into a business. Prep is easily more important than products ( no Turtle wax though ! ). The right prep combined with ordinary products will make a hugh difference. The right product with good prep ....:-)
You can't fix cracked paint - you can only minimize the damage. Why not err on the safe side ?
I've got a 14 year old car that still has all of its clearcoat intact without any checking. The plastic trim is getting tired though. It lives outside 60% of the time. Gets washed every couple of weeks. Gets chemically deepcleaned once a year, glazed 2 or 3 times a year, and waxed every couple of months.
