Default All I've heard is that major repairs are incredibly expensive ...

But I have yet to experience it myself even though, as some claim, I own the 2000MY A6 2.7T, which is supposed to have the highest rate of defects of the A6 range.

My defects so far (does not include, obviously, routine maint):
CD player would not read CDs, replaced w/warr
Oxygen sensors, replaced twice w/warr
temp sensor, replaced out/warr
CV Boot, replaced out/warr
Pass Side Window is really Slow, will fix myself

Default That's why I started this thead, I had heard the same. But as this response shows . . .

much of the negative talk seems to be overblown.

I know that none of this is scientific (neither this thread, nore the anecdotal posts about high repair costs). But I think one thing that this suggests is that the high cost ranting may overstate the issue significantly.

Default I'm not sure it is overblown, repairs ARE expensive...

the real point IMO is that there are a number of known weak points that can cost a lot to fix. Whether one or more happen to YOUR A6 is a crapshoot with varying odds.

It's your tolerance for playing those odds that governs whether you should, e.g., buy an extended service contract.

I usually don't but for my A6, which I love & would like to keep a LONG time (5 yrs. 2 mos. & 63k on it now), I did buy one.

I'd say AoA did about $3,000 worth of warranty work at my 50k service, cost me Zero (incl. cam seals, trans. seal, front tie rod ends, rear brake pads & rotors).

In 14 months under extended serv. K coverage, the scorecard is: 2 outer CV boots = ~$540. So if I have another $1,500 or so of covered work in the next 2 yrs.,1 month, I win. If not, I lose.

Also just had frt. brakes & rotors done, ~$482 (routine maint. cost).

Default You don't think any of that work was done BECAUSE warranty was paying?

I.E., not really necessary. Ya, it's a crap shoot on a more expensive repair. But still you are talking maybe what, 1500 to 2000. I'll take a roll of a dice on maybe not having to spend that cash over the CERTAIN out of pocket cost of 3500 for an extended warranty. But that's just me.

Default No, in fact I know it wasn't done only because of the warranty...

I had my indep. shop spend an hour with me going over the car before the warranty expired and we identified all of those items.

From what I hear the warranty payment is not that high to create a lot of incentive to do things that aren't needed.

But in this case, we pre-identified the work needed and the dealer confirmed it.

regards,
Jon
