Possible new A6 owner...some q's.
I'm looking to buy an A6.
I've found a few in my area at used places, but I have never owned an Audi before (current Camry owner looking to trade it in...yeah, Camry, I know) so I thought I'd see what some of the enthusiasts thought.
One ad that looks interesting is a 2001 A6 2.7 Turbo Auto.
- 111,000 mi.
the dealer is asking $7,000 for it.
From the pics, it looks to be in great condition.
My question is, is that a reasonable price for that year A6 with those miles?
thanks guys.
ps - there's another car - 2000 A6 2.7T that has 105k mi. on it, but it says it's a 6 speed and I thought the 6 speeds were only manual, but it lists it as automatic?
On the price, I paid 8K Canadian for similar car with similar mileage this year.
Before I picked it up, I verfied by looking through reciepts that the PO had done the timing belt service, ($1000 - $2000), had all brakes replaced ($$$), and had some suspension bits replaced, and more. This was all within a month of me buying it.
Things to look out for, and maybe use to talk the dealer down,
1. Timing belt service, if you can't verify it was done, it'll need to be done SOON!
2. Oil leaks, take it for a drive and unless the PO had seals replaced recently, you will smell burning oil. They leak oil from the valve cover gaskets, cam chain tensioner, and cam seals. You may not see it on the road under the car, cause it all lands on the exhaust somewhere and burns off! You'll need a mirror, flash light, and a little luck to spot the leaks. Look near the top of the motor, passenger side, between the fire wall and head. Mine was leaking from all of the above, lol.
3. Transmission. The 5sp tip(auto) has lots of cases of failing or failed torque converter seals, which will result in a check engine light, and a code something like: code 17125 P0741 035 torque converter lock-up clutch performance or stuck off. This requires a TC replacement to fix. Mine had it show up, after I purchased it, sadness. Car may drive fine, but apparently if left unchecked, it could take out a set of clutch packs in the tranny.
4. Control arms, have the suspension checked. Period.
5. Turbo life, keep in mind that if the turbos fail, it requires engine removal to replace (big $$$) But, most people just use that as an excuse to upgrade to larger units and make big hp!
I'm a DIY'er so most of the little things are no big deal, I did my own valve cover/cam seals, brake bleeding, transmission oil/filter change, etc. I wouldn't own this car if I was the type who had to bring it to a garage for any little issue. Period.
Hope that helps,
Gary
Here are two docs for the S4, but much of the engine related issues are the same so it applies. One of the previous posters covered a lot of it, but it might still be useful to you.
