Default Is it repairable ? Body damage after accident

Hi,

I had an accident - i ended up hitting concrete divider pretty hard. Bodyshop took the front bumper of and found cracks on one of the two big support things. Is it repairable, or do they need to take engine out to swap it ?

My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

Default I looks to me like the flange can be cut off and another one weld on in it's place. Or just weld up

the cracked areas then redrill and retap. With that said, I'm not a body man and I can only make a guess from pictures.

Default Yeph, but i don't think welding is a correct way of doing it.

May not have the same structural strength as the original part.

Default I believe those pieces are meant to crush, but can be replaced

They are sacrificed in an accident.....I believe you remove the whole thing where ever it attaches and then weld a new one on....this prevents the frame from bending by sacrificing this component.

Not cheap, but it allows a repair.

with engine in the car.

Default There are two ways to fix anything..

the safe way is to repace the crushable support with a new one.
the other is to cut the end off and put a new piece on the end.

From a visual inspection it looks like you did not do much damage to the support but just cracked the end piece. Personally, I would weigh the cost of the two options against the possible safety rammefication.

Default I don't really care about cost -- insurance pays for it. Just wondering if they can try cut corners

or they'll total my car ?
