Thanks to those who helped me here. The lower control arms were shot. I am out of warranty by 3,000 miles and my dealership contacted AoA for me and they have decided to good-will replace at no charge. When our A6 went off lease and the dealership had to inspect it for title transfer, the front suspension was wallah in need of about $4K worth or repairs....even though the car was recently inspected prior to end of warranty and pronounced ok. AOA and the dealer fixed/replaced control arms (I think there's about eight of them on the front left and right total).

You might want to look closely at all the balljoints and make sure the rubber boots are ok, too....I found out Audi policy is to replace balljoints with torn/missing rubber boots.
