Rock stuck between rotor and "shield?"

Rock stuck between rotor and "shield?"
For the second time, I've somehow gotten a rock stuck between the inside of rotor and what I believe is some type of "shield" for the rotor (sorry, I'm somewhat challenged as far as car parts go).
Just wondering if this happens to anyone else or if maybe the "shield" was installed incorrectly by the dealer when they replaced my last set of rotors (lapping day at SIR took its toll).
It's amazing the rock can get stuck and stay in there - creating the most unbelievably terrible sound. I don't usally drive in gravel but the two time it has happened have been on badly paved roads.
As the weather was bad when it happened, I've yet to pull of the wheel again to see if the rock did any damage to the rotor. Might just wait to the next dealer visit.
If nothing else this is an FYI - if you suddenly hear a terrible squealing noice comming from one of your wheels, pull of the wheel and look between the back of the rotor and the "shield" thing.

Pretty common racing rally cars. Should not damage the rotor....
The noise can be incredibly loud.
The rocks are usually softer than the rotor and they should dislodge by themselves after a short time.
Sometimes the rocks lodge between the calipers and the wheel causing damage to the wheels very quickly. Creates a hole that air escapes.
I would bet the noise you hear is rock(s) between the rotor and dust shield.
No big deal.
