S6 oil change rant and question...
Hi all,
Amazingly enough, I just completed my first oil change on my ;02 S6. All the others were under free maint or done free while in the shop for something else (like when I dented my oil pan).
Anyway, a few observations and questions:
1. The bentley has the wrong picture, and presumably torque specs, for the oil drain plug. They show a side mounted bolt - I have a bottom mounted 10mm allen with about a 20-25mm thread (!). I decide on "just about that tight"
2. Are they serious? You have to drop the sway bar to get at the oil filter????????? And then it drains oil on pretty much everything, including the rubber sway bar bushings???????
2a. if I wiped the excess of with a paper towel, will the oil residue hurt the bushings? Any long-term experience here?
2b. With the OF tucked up there behind the sub-frame, has anyone successfully pre-filled the filter with oil and then gotten it installed, without it draining, usually onto your face?
Grant

You didn't even complain about the belly pan mounts! 1. That's what I do also. 2. I didn't remove
the sway, but it is hard to get to. 2a. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt the bushings. 2b. I don't see how prefilling would be possible plus I don't think it necessary.

You should be using something from the latest Audi approved list...
No Amsoil products are listed, although many here have used them with good results (from oil analysis). Audi reccomends mostly 5W40 oils, with a couple 5W30 and 0W40's also on the list. I'm personally using Pentosin Pento High Performance 5W40 in my 4.2.

Newest Audi Approved Oil List

I roughly 1/2 fill the filter knowing that it will go through some odd angles
There is certainly no need to remove the sway bar. It can be a bit of a puzzle to get the filter up or down without turning it more than 90 degrees from vertical but it can be done. I'm partial to Syntec 5/40 as among the oils I've tried, it seems to have the least valve clatter on startup if the car hasn't been driven in a few days.

Oil filter is a bit of a PITA.....
It takes some wiggling to get it out and back in but you do not have to remove the sway bar. It does make a mess when it comes out. Just use some degreaser spray (brake cleaner?) and wipe down the messy parts.
The engineers who designed the filter arrangement never anticipated someone would actually have to change the filter. DOH!!!
No need to pre-fill the new filter.
I have an indy who changes mine for real cheap. I bring the Amsoil 5w-40 Euro (the first and best in synthetics) and a stealer filter.

Oh, I expect the belly pan fiasco, bvut since...
it saved my oil pan and some AC hoses earlier thsi year, I've decided I like it :-)
Its the sway bar thing that got me.
By the way, all these answers about "you dont need to remove it" are for the S6 Avant, right? Even Bentley says that on the RS6 it must be removed. On the S6 they are silent....
Anyway, its done.
Thanks, all,
Grant
