Default True. Incremental cost. They are working in that area already.

If the belt goes, you lose power steering, alternator, and a/c.

Don't be surprised if upon inspection, they may find that one or more bearings in the components, idlers, or tensioner are shot (you can tell this by free play in the pulley and/or noisy when turned). Better to replace whatever needs replacing now, rather than pay somebody to go back in there again, not that long down the road.

Basically if you do the timing belt, plan on water pump, accessory belt(s), radiator hoses, and a few other minor items.

Default Remember--Everything that the dealer does is a scam!!

It is a good idea to replace other belts when changing the timing belt. Rubber ages when exposed to ozone and heat. I suggest changing radiator hoses at the 100K mark. I rather spend a little money on maintenance then to worry after a part has failed.

Default Great point, but that's assuming they charge "incremental cost" and not book.

You and I know that with the nose taken apart, the serpentine belt is a 30 minute job, max. Any bets as to what the dealer would charge? I know that not all dealers are "stealers" but you have to play the odds.

Default As a consumer, you need to do your own homework. After you build a relationship you're

comfortable with, do you ever trust them. That goes for any business transaction with considerable money involved.

Just took my A3 in for service and got a Chevy Cobalt for a loaner - thought of you.

Yes, it only makes sense. They have to remove it anyway. Might as well replace it.

Should be zero labor cost. That belt comes off anyway.

Default I work on corporate jet transactions on a very regular basis and can confirm....

... that the level of honesty, trust and integrity in $25 million aircraft transactions is markedly higher than what I typically find in the automotive sales and service industries. In part it is because a $500 dispute is not likely to lead to anything worse than a consumer complaint, whereas a $500,000 dispute will be litigated.

Default Entirely different league. Even the car biz at the higher levels is generally more above board.

What really sucks in car sales and service, is when somebody has been recently lied to, and now they don't trust anything you say (for good reason), or they need a repair resulting from shoddy work, and you don't know how to put it without slinging mud. Must be the same in your business.
