Some Diff questions
I'm under my '03 s6 and was changing Diff fluid and changing the center output seal and had a couple questions....
Does my car have a front Diff or is it built into the transmission? I didn't see a seperate drain and fill plug for a front Diff but I could have missed it :-)
I was positive that all Diffs on this car took gear Oil (I forget the exact weight but I bought the correct one), but as I was draining the center Diff I saw the fluid coming out was red.... Did the PO (or his shop) put in atf? And if so how much damage was done to the center Diff?
The rear fluid was yellow/tan so I'm assuming it was correct.

Ok so in looking around I am pretty sure I know where the front Diff drain/fill plug is and it looks like I will need to pump out the old fluid. OK that's fine :-)
Looking through the service records the PO gave me, it looks like rear seal was done about 35k miles ago, I see no other Trans or Diff service since then, so I have to assume that the center Diff had atf in it for 35k miles... This seems like it could be very hard on the Diff being that aft is alot thinner vs 75/90 gear Oil... Should I just fill it up (after putting in a new rear seal) and just drive it, or should I do more diagnostics and check it out more before I drive on it?
I am sure you are fine.
Front diff has no drain, but if it was not contaminated, you probably don't need to drain it.
