Steering Rack Problems

Steering Rack Problems
I have a 1995 S6 which I have loved from the day I purchased it. However, in 1998, the steering rack developed a crack. After much discussion with AofA, they finally covered the problem under warranty. 22,000 miles later, I have just been told by my dealership that the rack has developed a leak and needs to be replaced AGAIN. AofA tells me the car is out of warranty and the replacement part is also out of warranty - tough luck. My question is, has anyone else had these kinds of problems with their steering racks? I understand "wear items" being replaced, such as brake pads, etc. But a $3,000.00 steering rack should not fail after 22,000 miles, in my opinion. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

This seems to be an ongoing problem . . .
. . . with Audi and VW steering racks. Mine failed (exploded, in fact) at less than 2000 miles. Replaced under warranty, but had to wait for the part to come from Germany, all the US supply having been used up. The dealer said they've seen this more than once on A6's and VW Passats (which must use the same or a very similar steering rack from the same supplier).

The rack is from ZF. Many cars with that unit have had failures.
It may be shared with the Alfa 164 or the Saab 9000 ( others too I'm sure ). Try those clubs/forums to ask for other sources of less expensive avenues.

AoA replaced three racks in our 1985 5000S....and one in our 2000 TT.
I suppose it's developed a leaky seal. If that's the case, AoA gets these rebuilt, which I suppose is a lot cheaper that buying a new one.

Re: This seems to be an ongoing problem . . .
Thannks for the ideas. I'm just amazed that someone from Audi doesn't step up and say "Yes, this is a problem, 22,000 miles should not destroy a rack, and we will help correct it." I was at the Chicago Auto Show last night and spoke with some AofA representatives. They agreed with me and gave me the regional representatives number. I'll give that a try....it can't hurt! Anyone know about changes to the 2003 A6? I think there is a complete redo on the '04.
