Strange oil Leak c5 4.2 transmission
I've got a 2002 A6 Quattro Sedan with the 4.2L motor and tiptronic tranny. There is a leak coming from off of the top of the transmission just forward of the tailshaft housing which drips down the drivers side of the housing onto a small shield then onto one of the resonators or cats (not sure which it is.) It is for sure not the tailshaft seal, it is 'way too far forward. I can't for the life of me figure out where it might be coming from, except it is definitely the tranny because someone put red Dextron in it and so it is quite distinctive. I changed the fluid with the correct synthetic and was doing the topping off procedure when I noticed it dripping red. So it was in some area of the transmission that wasn't yet mixed with the new fluid. Does anywone know what might be leaking in this area?

possible coolant leak?
I just had a coolant leak on my 4.2 on one of the heater hose o-rings near firewall driver's side that dripped onto trans and followed trans pan a bit. Every morning, I got a teaspoon or two of pink coolant.

[QUOTE=socalclimber;24422478]Are you sure it is trans fluid? Could it be coolant (pink)?
Absolutely not. I compared fluids and the coolant is very pale, while the transmission fluid is more viscous and quite vividly red. I checked locally and was told there is a transmission vent in the area I cited. The next question is why it should be venting fluid when it wasn't even full yet!
