timing belt - Pep Boys -

Re: Basic understanding of timing belt changes..
Correct. If the timing was off, the running problem would not have corrected itself. Not much help here on the noise without actually hearing it. Both the serpentine and timing belt are self tensioning so it cant be too tight. Now whether or not they got the timing belt tensioner assy back together correctly, who knows. I have seen a couple of instances where the tech cranked down so hard on the tensioner to compress the hydraulic damper that it sheared the tensioner roller retaining bolt. The damper is supposed to be compressed in a vice and held in place with a locking pin. In the case of a broken bolt the belt will be extremely loose and make quite a bit of noise as it will be fluttering/flopping around. Lots of of probables here, i would seek the ears and eyes of somebody in your area with some solid Audi experience. ed

10 times worse when you're female :-( They assume you know nothing, and you can't
change their minds. I took my car to a local exhaust shop that treated hubby well. Well, they treated me like crap, drove my car like a$$holes, and didn't get the exhaust tip on at the correct angle or length. Grrrrrrr.
I only go to independent specialty shops with a reputation for knowing their stuff. Saves lots of time, hassle, and usually money. It might hurt up front, but there are no lingering hassles.
