First, learn about what you are doing. You asked about tires. They dont matter much. The wheels do. You need to know the diameter, the width and the offset. Even after that there can be issues.

255/40-17 is a stock size from Audi ( e.g.: S6) on 17 x 8 x -35mm wheels. Dont knwo what that all means? Learn. the '-35mm"may be the most important. It is called offset, and it acts similarly to spacers.

My opinion. If you need spacers, you have the wrong wheels. Spacers can cause problems.

The you are good to go 255/40-17 is an OEM size. You can also check the operating diameter of the tire/wheel combination by using geometry: diameter = 2* radius; circumference = 2*pi*r, and of course you need to convert inches ( wheels) to millimeters ( tires) and add them to get the radius and/or diameter.

Its not rocket science.

But back to my original post, you realize that the tire does not determine whether there is rub or another fitment problem so much as the wheel. The wheel positioned the entire assembly either moving it "in" or "out".

I personally would run 245/45-17 to get a bit better ride and rim protection on potholed roads.

It is about 2% larger around.
