Default Torque Converter- good rebuilt experience?

My 2003 A6 3.0 (112,000) unsurprisingly needs a new TC. My local indy shop told me they've had nothing but bad results with rebuilt units. They'll only install a new one from the dealer. Has anyone had any positive experiences with rebuilt TC's, or should I just suck it up at pay for the new one ($1,200 for parts)?

Thanks for any input,

Garth

My friend's shop has them rebuilt all the time. No issues.

Rebuilding is fine...if done by a ZF certified shop.

This /\

Many RS6's grenade the ORIGINAL oem torque converters very early in life... However, once the oem's are rebuilt by a ZF certified shop using UPDATED components, failure rates are extremely low.

Is there a directory out there for certified ZF shops? Any known in New England? Thanks.

Thanks for the link. They do have a certified ZF rebuilt in stock, much cheaper than a new dealer TC. The problem is I can't find anyone willing to put in a rebuilt unit, so I may have to suck-it up and pay for the new one.

Did you ask them for a shop recommendation?

Coventry Motor Car might do it for you if they are slow.

They did give me names of two shops they dealt with, but both said they would only do new units. I'll keep looking.
