I've been estimating my mileage whenever I fill gas up and it appears that the trip computer mileage is saying about one and a half miles higher than the actual mileage. Meaning if I estimate 20 mpg, the trip computer says 21.5 mpg. I have an A6 4.2. Anybody else experiencing this ?

It's funny, but the trip computer is PESSIMISTIC when estimating how much further I can drive without running out of gas, but OPTIMISTIC when telling me my average MPG. I understand the conservatism on remaining mileage, to make it less likely you run out of gas, but I don't know why it's so generous on MPG.

I think our A6 is the same way, but that's my wife's car and I don't track the actual mileage since she usually is the one filling the tank.

I complained about this on this site long ago.

A friend with an A4 2.8 claims his is spot on. I have concluded he doesn't actually check it.

My average MPG for a tank is usually 15.5-16 by computer, and about 14 by calcuation.

The difference is idling time, which the computer doesn't take into account. It takesstraight mileage.
