Hi, The turn signals on my wife's 2001 A6 4.2 recently stopped working and I was just about to go pick up a relay unit until I came accross this (most excellent) post.
When you mention "the relay was replaced and the problem still existed", can you please clarify what the problem was? On my wife's car, the turn signals don't work, but the hazzards do (and all the bulbs are fine).
Also, I have a heated steering wheel which I guess would only complicate your stalk replacement proceedure (and probably steer me to not try DIY).

The signal functioned, but it would tick incessantly when not activated...
Using the signal or hazards would actually stop the random ticking. It sounds like it may be the hazard relay in your case.
