Types of VAG-COM
Hello all,
Im interested in purchaseing a VAG-COM for my A6 but i'm still unsure on which type/model to get.. I know abosolutly nothing about these. I would like to purchase one so I could do dianostics and program features in like, the needle sweep on start up.
All I know is that I see them on E-bay for 20 bucks or so.. does that include all the software and EVERYTHING needed... minus the laptop ofcourse.
Anyways.. if someone could explain the VAG-COM to me that would be great.

What you buy on eBay, if it is sold as vag-com, then it is pirated asian product. I bought the real deal from Ross-Tech - hex-usb cable.
You can also buy a cheap $20 cable online and use the shareware (free) version of VCDS (vag-com), but some features won't be there. Still unbeatable for diagnosing.
You can email ross-tech and find out what product will work with your car, i don't think you need the hex-usb cable, but if you choose to upgrade your car to a 2005/2006 or later, you'll be glad to have had it.

I have the cheap eBay cable and free lite version. Works great for $15. But now I want more features that lite won't allow unless I register ($100) still not a bad deal.
If you think about it a diagnostic at the dealer is about 100. A registered vcds is about 115 and it's lifetime.

+1 on the Ross-Tech VCDS. It's really the only way to go other than a full blown Audi scanner that the dealership uses. It seems like a lot at $300-350 for the hex-usb full cable, but it'll save you that much many times over and is a necessity if you own one of these cars for any length of time.
