Default update: my 2.7 - year 2000 - 100K miles - my alternator failed.....here are details

was driving along - battery light came on....kept driving....about 60 miles later (highway miles) I pulled into a town, and the guages lights started dimming, the car started loosing power, ABS light came on also, and then the car just stalled. It was the alternator. Local shop charged me $295 labor and $379 for a remanf valeo alternator - total $727....seems steep to me...I found a NEW valeo for $400, but time was an issue as always.

Default Been there done that it is a PITA to fix the alternator

I only paid $200 for my alternator though wholesale. Audi wanted $700 for a remanufactured.

No harm no foul, Something major could have failed right? Car looks great. Are those ALLROAD door spears on the side? Im looking to get a 2.8 and beef it up a bit.

Default FWIW

Flat rate on an A8 is 1.1 hours.

I'm expect a 2.7 would be longer, due to the RH intercooler and plumbing blocking access, but don't know for sure.

Default Beat you by 1,000 miles. Mine went at 101,000 - remanufactured..

cost $390, labor was $230. Basically need to remove half the front end to get to it. Precisely why I don't work on my cars anymore! This was a great Indie shop that I've gone to over the years (Status in Derry NH). New alternators were quoted at $500 - $800, so the job would have been $730 to $1,030!! if new. All of a sudden $620 seems like a bargain.

I'm trouble-free. Always synthetic oil, change every 5 or 6k miles, do the warm up cool down.
