Default US S4 v. Euro S4 v. US 2.7T Horsepower figures etc

If a European S4 has 265hp and 290+lb torque and the US S4 and 2.7t have 250hp and 258lb torque exactly what differences are there between them? I can understand minor differences with exhaust systems and tweaking with the ECU's but where did all that torque go? Also did the first S4's in the US have 265hp quoted? I thought that the Audi literature said as much. Do Audi understate the figures in the US?

I think ECU, and exhaust... like you said.

>>did the first S4's in the US have 265hp quoted?

Don't think so.

>>Do Audi understate the figures in the US?

Yup, but not that much... I think +/- 8hp on the S4.

All US S4's have been 250HP only from the start. It appears Audi only wanted to pass one engine through emissions, so they split the difference between the EU A6 2.7T (230HP) and the EU S4 (265HP).

Where did all the torque go? Nowhere. We've got most of it. Audi just blatantly lies about the torque figures in the US.

Go to the link below. Under the Stage 1 upgrade, click on the "click for dyno info" link. Look at the torque curve for the stock S4.

Audi says it makes 258ft-lbs from 1850 to 3600. Yes, that it does. It makes a lot more than that for much of the range. I think Audi did the right thing, because which sounds better:

270ft-lbs @ 1850RPM

or

258ft-lbs @ 1850-3600RPM.

I think this answers your third question:

Does Audi understate the figures in the US?

Yep. And on the A6 2.7T, it's a good think. Which 4.2 owner wants to hear his engine only makes 30 more ft-lbs than a 2.7T? Now, I know all the torque in the curve isn't going to make the turbo lag on the 2.7T go away. But I think showing a 50ft-lb margin on the 4.2 is a good marketing idea.

http://www.goapr.com/S4/s4.html#chip</a

Default Thanks Steve

Looking at the APR graph it looks like 280lbs torque around 1800 rpm. Thanks for the input.

Default US vs. Euro...it's all about timing & octane

The Euro 2.7T is only tuned for 230hp in the A6, and runs much less boost (similar to the boost levels on the pre-2001 1.8T) than the S4. The U.S. S4 runs the same boost as the Euro S4, and does in fact make a little more than 250hp -- even the dealer's sales manual states this. The difference in power between the two is timing changes in the ECU for different levels of gas. The 265hp Euro S4 is tuned for 98 RON (approx. 95 R+M/2) octane, which is not available in the U.S., while the "250hp" US S4 is tuned for approx. 95 RON (approx. 91-93 R+M/2) octane. Otherwise, we've been assured the engine's power levels are the same. Both the Euro and US 2.7T's have pre-cats. Don't forget how good 250hp in the A6 2.7T sounds when pressed in between the 200hp 2.8 and 300hp 4.2.
