Used Speedometer immobilizer problem
I have a 2001 A6 4.2 Lots of dead pix in speedo display. I obtained a used cluster off ebay and both clusters have the same part number both and are 4.2 cluster of the same year. I installed the "ebay" cluster and the immobilizer light is blinking and it will not let the car run for longer than 2 seconds. Is there a way to introduce the "ebay" speedo to the ECU to make the immobilizer happy?? The tech article by AUDISEAN is for 1999 car with analog clock. Mine is 2001 with digital.
Thanks for any help

You did not do your homework...
2001 has the immobilizer issue, and you cannot recode the cluster to the car without the Secret Key Code (SKC) which is not obtainable from anywhere.
In years past, you could have gone to the dealer with the VIN and obtained the code, but since switching over to the GEKO system, the dealers never see the code, but the car is coded when hooked up to the system.
That is why Sean's writeup had a link to the NON-immobilizer version of the cluster...he did not have to deal with that.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/faq_4.html#skc">Info from Ross Tech about SKC</a></li></ul>

2nd. Plus, no dealer is going to deal with a used cluster since they can't confirm the mileage.
If they know what happened, odds are they'll refuse the work. Best case (and not a very good one), you'll end up with a TMU (true mileage unknown) sticker and tag on your VIN.

Re: Used Speedometer immobilizer problem
It is not a total loss, I am going to take it to the local electronic repair nut and see if he can repair the center display. This guy is really really good at what he does. I will post back if he can repair it. Someday someone will figure out how to tap into the code, it is only a matter of time. Microsoft and Audi do not have all of the smart computer people.
