Default Voltmeter at max

When I start the car the meter goes up to max, even past it and stays there. I have measured the battery and it's at 14V when the car is running. When just the ignition is on, it shows 14-15V when it actually is around 12V. Have heard that it's a common problem? Anyone knows what the problem is?

Do you know if there's a way to fix it?

I've read that you can calibrate it in VCDS. It was something like you can set all instruments in calibration mode, for example, the tank gauge and voltmeter should stand straight up. Do they stand a bit wrong, disassemble and move the needle. If they are correct, probably the engine for the meter is bad.

Any truth to this?

That's very strange. A voltmeter is inherently high impedance so it seems like it'd be hard to go much out of calibration. And dropping either connection would read zero. I think I'm with George944. I suppose you could pull the cluster and put a known voltage on it directly to test.

So I'm gonna run a calibrating test. If everything looks fine then I guess the pointer motor could be at fault. But shouldn't the fuel- and tempmeter also be faulty then? It's just the voltmeter that is acting up.

Each gauge is mechanically independent.

Ok. So the voltmeter has its own pointer motor?

But isn't it the same motor to the fuel- and temp meter. And the same motor to the rev- and speedometer?

Like it says here: AK speedo

Based on the link in your post, I'm guessing you are in England/ Great Britain? If in North America, suggest contacting Module Masters. The redo instrument clusters on a lot of different manufacturers vehicles. They are also very friendly and a good source for advice and could probably point you in the right direction.

I'm in Sweden. The link was just the first I found

But I did the test and the needle did not stand straight up like the others so I'm gonna disassemble the cluster and move the needle myself while I'm doing the test. It seems like it's showing 2V too much all the time. When the ignition is on. When I started the car. When I did the test etc. So it should work
